The Breton top: five ways to wear it
You can't talk about Parisian style without it. Born on the coast of Brittany and adopted by fashion's greatest names, the Breton top has become a timeless staple. In knit, it gains softness and can be worn well beyond summer. Here are five ways to make it yours.
1. With raw denim, quite simply
The most Parisian pairing there is. A Breton top, straight-leg jeans, ballet flats or white trainers: nothing more, and it's perfect. Tuck the front of the jumper loosely into your jeans to define the waist.
2. Under a blazer
For the office, slip a fine-knit Breton top under a structured jacket. The stripes soften the formality of the blazer and add a relaxed touch, without losing any elegance.
3. With a midi skirt
A fluid or pleated skirt with a close-fitting Breton top: the silhouette is feminine and balanced. In winter, add boots and opaque tights.
4. Knotted over the shoulders
The chicest gesture of all: a Breton top draped over the shoulders, sleeves knotted, over a white shirt or a plain dress. It finishes the outfit and keeps you warm as evening falls.
5. Head-to-toe stripes… in moderation
For the boldest: a Breton top with a striped accessory (scarf, bag) in similar tones. The trick is to play with different stripe widths and keep the rest of the outfit understated.
The right habit
Wash a knitted Breton top gently, by hand or on a wool cycle, and dry it flat to keep its shape and the crispness of its stripes.
